چکیده

We read with great interest the article titled “Intestinal ischemia after laparoscopic cholecystectomy” in the most recent issue of JSLS authored by Drs Leduc and Mitchell. In their manuscript, the authors describe their experience with a case of mesenteric vascular catastrophe after a laparoscopic procedure. In addition, the authors summarize the other reported cases they were able to find as of the date of their submission. Unfortunately, their list is not complete, as we had the opportunity to publish a case report and similar analysis of 6 cases in 1997. We certainly do not mean to imply that such an omission was intentional. Indeed, shortly after our series was published in 1997, we received a similar letter from another author notifying us of our failure to acknowledge a previously published communication on the same subject. We feel this demonstrates a need to standardize the indexing and terminology related to this evolving phenomenon so that a better understanding can be achieved regarding the true incidence of this often-catastrophic event. Sincerely,

Intestinal Ischemia After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

OBJECTIVES Intestinal ischemia is a rarely reported complication following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We describe a case of massive small intestinal necrosis 3 days following this procedure. An autopsy determined the cause to be splanchnic hypoperfusion, likely due to the physiologic changes induced by the pneumoperitoneum necessary to conduct the surgery. We sought to determine whether all ...

Re: JSLS 2007;11(3):389–393 Fatal Intestinal Ischemia After Laparoscopic Correction of Incisional Hernia

I found the article Fatal Intestinal Ischemia After Laparoscopic Correction of Incisional Hernia by Dr. E. B. Wassenaar et al (2007:11(3):389–393) very interesting and illuminating concerning mesenteric arterial atherosclerosis and its most severe end point. Their 47-year-old patient exhibited postlaparoscopy intestinal ischemia requiring visceral angiography and inferior mesenteric artery angi...

The April-June 2006 edition of JSLS contained 2 disturbing papers addressing technical aspects of vascular control in laparoscopic donor nephrectomies. Lallas et al report an algorithm developed during a series of 200 cases performed at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona in which “early vessel branching or a potential for inadequate vessel length” prompted the use of Hem-o-lok clips on the ...

Cicatrical Cecal Volvulus Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the procedure of choice for the treatment of symptomatic biliary disease. There is currently no agreement on the management of spilled gallstones, which commonly occurs during laparoscopic cholecystectomy and may produce significant morbidity. We present a case of spilled gallstones causing cicatrical cecal volvulus and also provide a review of pertinent literature.

Intestinal ischemia following laparoscopic surgery: a case series

UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION Intestinal ischemia is a rare complication of laparoscopic surgery. Its prognosis depends on a high index of suspicion and effective early treatment. CASE PRESENTATION In the present report, we describe three cases where intestinal ischemia developed following laparoscopic surgery. Case 1 concerns a 52-year-old Caucasian man who developed large bowel ischemia follow...
